Ohio House Districts

OHIOANS DESERVE FAIR REPRESENTATION

It's time to end gerrymandering in Ohio. For good.

THE PROBLEM: GERRYMANDERING

GERRYMANDERING is when electoral districts are drawn by incumbent politicians to maintain their power, with the intention of influencing elections to their advantage.

MAIN GOAL OF GERRYMANDERING: For the political party in power to maintain their power by rigging districts in their favor.

The more this happens, the more untouchable legislators become.

Gerrymandering distorts democracy, leading to political outcomes and policy decisions that are not what the majority of voters actually want.

CITIZENS NOT POLITICIANS is an Ohio constitutional amendment proposed by the Fair Districts Coalition (which includes the League of Women Voters of Ohio) to fix the problem of gerrymandering. The ballot initiative campaign earlier this year collected enough signatures to put the amendment before voters in November for approval. If approved by voters, the amendment will take the power of drawing district maps away from politicians and place it in the hands of a newly-appointed Citizens Redistricting Commission comprised of five citizens from the Republican party, five citizens from the Democratic party, and five citizens who vote as independents. Current or former politicians, party officials, or lobbyists will not be allowed to serve on the commission. The commission's work will be done independently, and the process will be completed transparently. Click here to read the full proposed constitutional amendment.
